The Big Dirt Dig gives children a chance to enjoy an immersive, hands-on play experience that excites both their senses and imagination.
The Big Dirt Dig will be 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. Aug. 24 at the Street Department maintenance facility, 701 Warren Barrett Drive. The event will be under a big Quonset hut, so weather won’t be a factor.
The event is sponsored by Hannibal Parks & Recreation, Hannibal Street Department and Parents as Teachers. The city of Hannibal will provide huge piles of sand and dirt for youngsters to play in and will also have several maintenance trucks on display. Children are encouraged to bring shovels, buckets, trucks, and digging toys.
Whitney Holliday, director of Hannibal Parents as Teachers, said, “Some of the best learning comes through play. I’m sure each child will have a sensory-rich experience – developing motor and problem-solving skills with each scoop of sand or dirt.”
