The Ronny Ferrel Hannibal Aquatic Center is open 1-6 p.m. daily, allowing people to cool off during these days of extreme heat. Crowds are at high levels since the pool opened June 1.

The administrative staff make sure the lifeguards stay hydrated during long hot days at the pool. Emily Hultgren, aquatics director, said several steps are taken to ensure lifeguards stay safe:

  • Lifeguards sit under umbrellas
  • They carry water with them on the stand
  • They have a 30-minute break every 90 minutes

Hultgren said she and her staff monitor the condition of co-workers and patrons at the pool.

She said the aquatics staff reserves the right to refuse admittance to the pool when that capacity has been reached or when necessary for the health and safety of the patrons.

She encourages everyone to be cautious during hot days. “Make sure to drink plenty of fluids before and during your swim. Wear sunscreen and wear a hat or sunglasses to protect your eyes from the sun.”
